MOCA IN PLASTIC MATERIALS: EUROPEAN LIST OF AUTHORIZED SUBSTANCES UPDATED: Regulation (EU) No. 2018/831 of 5th June, 2018

On 5th June 2018 the European Commission has passed the Regulation (EU) No. 2018/831, which amending Reg. (EU) No. 10/2011, concerning plastic materials and objects intended to come into contact with food products. The changes concern the European list of authorized substances (Annex I of Reg. (EU) 10/2011).

 The Regulation it involves the modification of the specific migration limits (SML) of two substances:

• “Perchloric acid, salts” (FCM 822), the limit of which is reduced from 0.05 mg/kg to 002 mg/kg;

• “Phosphorous acid, mixed 2,4-bis(1,1- dimethylpropyl)phenyl and 4-(1,1- dimethylpropyl)phenyl triesters” (FCM 974), the limit of which is raised from 5 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg.

Furthermore, two new compounds are introduced:

• “1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphtalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, dimethyl ester" (FCM 1066; CAS No. 23985-75-3);

• " [3-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propyl]trimethoxy silane" (FCM 1068; CAS No. 2530-83-8).

The regulation will enter into force on 26th June, 2018.

Plastic materials and articles complying with Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011 as applicable before the entry into force of this Regulation, may be placed on the market until 26 June 2019 and may remain on the market until exhaustion of stocks.
